Chimney Caps, Dampers, & Chase Covers

The top of your chimney is exposed to rain, snow, animals, leaves, wind, and temperature swings. A properly fitted chimney cap, top-sealing damper, or chase cover helps protect the flue, reduce moisture damage, improve comfort, and keep your fireplace system working the way it should.

Chimney protection from the top down

Caps stop problems before they get inside

A chimney cap is a simple, cost-effective way to help keep rain, animals, leaves, and debris out of the chimney. A top-sealing damper can also help reduce heat loss when the fireplace is not being used.

Chimney caps

Protection from rain, animals, leaves, and debris

  • Keeps rain and snow out of the flue
  • Helps block birds, squirrels, raccoons, and other varmints
  • Helps keep leaves and wind-blown debris from clogging the chimney
  • Can reduce backpuffing and downdrafts in the right chimney setup
  • Protects masonry, mortar joints, dampers, and metal components from water damage
Top-sealing dampers

Comfort, control, and less heat loss

  • Seals at the top of the chimney when the fireplace is not in use
  • Helps reduce heated-air loss through a leaky or missing throat damper
  • Uses a handle in the firebox for simple open-and-close operation
  • Adds chimney-top protection while improving comfort and energy efficiency
Rain causes expensive damage

Water entering an uncapped chimney can attack mortar joints, corrode metal parts, create odors, and contribute to damper problems over time.

A missing damper wastes heat

When a damper is missing, broken, frozen, or does not seal properly, heated air can escape up the chimney and leave the home feeling drafty.

What do chimney caps do?

A chimney cap lets smoke and flue gases exit while helping keep unwanted things out. The brochure highlights some of the biggest reasons caps matter: rain, birds, squirrels, raccoons, leaves, debris, and draft-related backpuffing. Moisture alone can damage mortar, metal parts, and the damper area, so a properly fitted cap is a small upgrade that can prevent larger repairs.

Dampers: comfort + control

A damper helps control airflow. When the fireplace is not in use, a well-sealed damper can reduce heat loss and cold drafts. Top-sealing dampers close at the top of the flue and are operated from the firebox, making them a practical option when an old throat damper is missing, broken, or hard to move.

Problems caused by lack of maintenance

Cap mesh is useful, but it can clog with soot, creosote, leaves, or animal debris if neglected. A clogged screen restricts ventilation and can lead to:

  • Hard starts and smoky fireplaces
  • Weak draft or poor ventilation
  • Smoke or odors backing into the home
  • Potential carbon monoxide risks in severe cases

Signs you may need service

  • Rain, snow, leaves, or animal debris in the fireplace
  • A damper that is hard to move, frozen, missing, or broken
  • Smoke coming back into the room during use
  • Water stains, odors, rust, or masonry deterioration around the chimney
  • A missing, loose, damaged, or poorly fitting chimney cap
